Dear Debt Letter from La Tejana

by Melanie

This Dear Debt letter is from La Tejana at Las Aventuras de la Tejana. She’s a new blogger and has paid off over 3k in student loans this month! Wow. Show her some love. You can also follow her on twitter.

Querida Deuda,

Where do we even start? I must say, you have done quite a number on me.

The first few months were agonizing. Payments were hard. You turned me into a wreck.  I couldn’t sleep at night, I only lay in bed thinking of how the in the world I would pay off all $80,000 I owed back to you. How many years it would take. How I could never enter a serious relationship with you hiding in my closet. How I would forever be striving for financial freedom.

Then I was able to get on my feet with a second and third job and could pay more. $200 extra here, $400 extra there. It added up. You were getting smaller. Slowly, but surely you were dwindling as every extra payment was made, and I was ready to do whatever it took.

Then the burnout set in. Working 7 days a week? Still having $69,000 in debt? Was it going to take this much hard work all the time?

Loan 4 was then paid off and yes, yes I knew I could keep going.

Debt, as a 17 year old college student and 21 year old graduate student, I never expected that you would have such an unbearably painful and seemingly never ending grip on my life.

It’s hard to say that I regret using you to go to a private university or get a master’s degree. Without those experiences I wouldn’t be who I am today (financial nut included), but I know I will NEVER, EVER, EVER use you again.

What a funny relationship, Debt.

Sin amor,

La Tejana

$3k in one month is amazing, awesome job! You’re making great progress, and having extra jobs shows a lot of dedication. Just remember you have a whole community cheering you on when you feel a little down about things. I’m still dealing with student loans, too, and you’re not alone =).

That burn-out feeling can really be a nuisance but look at how you did: paying off 3K is not an easy thing to many who struggle so much in debt repayments. You have achieved something and that is important. Here’s wishing you all the best. Keep it up!
