Dear Debt,

It’s me, Mackenzie. Yes, I know you’re busy and have a lot on your plate. Between government shutdowns and student loan debacles, you certainly have your hands full.

But I’m here to tell you that our relationship is over. You are incessant in your demands, and unforgiving when it comes to my heart. You made me believe that you could “cure what ails”, but it was all a lie.

No amount of money, no amount of “Jonesing” is worth having you around. What I thought was happiness that you provided, was really just misery. And guess what? I don’t need your company.

Your statements, your percentages, your unwillingness to be upfront with what you truly stand for…Despicable is what you really are. I am tired of being judged on past actions, past affiliations with you, dear debt. We met when I was a young woman in college, so naïve, so gullible.

But I’m not a young girl anymore. I am a wise woman, a woman who knows better than to keep associating with you. So I’m going. I’m treading water and I am emerging from the dark water of you, debt.

Goodbye dear debt. Don’t let the door hit ya, on the way out.

Hey Debt – Wait Until You Meet this Girl!

Hello Friends. This Dear Debt Letter is from my blogging buddy and debt destroying partner in crime, Girl Meets Debt. Enjoy!

Dear Debt,

I honestly don’t know what my adult life would be like without you! Pathetic eh?

You and I met when I was just a young 18-year-old college student and together with my massive student loan we were the three inseparable musketeers! Shopping trips, expensive blonde salon highlights, Girls Night Out, manis/pedis, dinner, drinks, dancing, were just a few examples of the fun we had. Oh ya, somewhere in there I also graduated with 2 Bachelor’s Degrees before the age of 25. Two expensive pieces of paper worth a total of $45,000! The fun continued even after I graduated. The dependency on each other was becoming obvious. You were becoming “normal.”

Now I am a 30-year-old woman, recently engaged to a personal finance rock star (ohhhhh the irony!) that has been serious about “un-friending” you for the last 10 months and I think I am finally starting to see some hope. I just broke up with the loser $12,000 consumer leech, the same one that’s been following me around since I was 18 and I couldn’t feel more relieved. I’m still tackling my “it’s complicated” $45,000 student loan relationship with you but I’m no longer afraid. In fact, I’m going to make sure I do everything I can to break your interest-greedy heart.

Debt, you would think that I despise you, but guess what? I actually want to thank you for helping make me to be the strong financially empowered woman I am today.

Breaking up is hard to do so I thought I would make it interesting and blog about it. 😉

Sweetheart, you won’t know what hit you!

This Dear Debt letter is from Erin at Red Debted Stepchild. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her in person, and she’s hilarious and awesome!  She’s also a finalist for the Plutus Awards’ Most Humorous Personal Finance blog! Congrats, girl.

Dear Debt,

It’s not you, it’s me. No, like seriously. After all, I ran you up. I used you and used you and now it’s my turn to feel the pain.

We had a great run — shopping and eating out all the time, throwing caution and delayed gratification to the wind. But what we have isn’t healthy. I just don’t feel the same way about you anymore.

You didn’t do anything wrong. I made choices that put us in a relationship that makes me sick to my stomach. I used you and you let me do it. Even now, I think you were okay, maybe even pleased, with how many times I used you for my own gain. But I can’t do this anymore. Frankly, we both deserve better. And as much as it pains me to say this, there is someone else.

I know, I know — I led you on just to fall for something better. You probably thought we’d be together forever. That I would continue to swipe, borrow, and pay interest until we were old and gray. But I met someone. His name is Financial Independence, and he’s better for me. He wants me to be happy and free. It’s just a healthier situation all around. And not to get any digs in, but he is way more attractive than you.

So now, I take the slow and painful steps to erase you from my life. I know it sounds harsh, but know that I will always remember you. I will remember the good times we had and I will remember the pain I now have to endure as a consequence of all that “fun”. Please ignore the mean comments I make about you on my blog, Twitter, and Facebook. I’m just hurting.

I really hope you don’t find anyone else, for their sake. You were born to be a bachelor.

You’re not welcome

I’m about to cry.

I’m about to cry the crazy type of tears not because I’m sad but because I’m so angry and frustrated.

I’m about to cry because some days I just don’t know what else to do.  I feel like everything has been done to divorce you, yet you’re still here.  The worst part is knowing I invited you through the door without even realizing it.   You sort of put a foot in as I was trying to close it, the rushed in, ransacked my home, slapped me around while chained to a chair, then ate all my food.

You’re still here.

But, I’m done crying now.  Can’t suffer that shame forever.

You’re no longer welcome.  I found a case hardened steel file in my brain, and I’m sawing back and forth on that chain right now while you’re getting fat and not paying attention.  It’s taking forever, and it feels like there is no hope or progress.  Chains are like that — you’re either in them or not in them, and halfway doesn’t count for anything.

When I finish sawing, my wrists will be bloody and I’ll be severely fatigued — perhaps near death.

But, I will break out because something inside me can’t accept this.  Jump up.  I’ll slap the shit out of you when I’m done. I will grab you by the hair and drag you down the hall to shove you out the same way you came in.  Like I said, you’re no longer welcome.

I live here – not you.

I hate you, debt

Dear Debt,

This is a poem inspired by the infamous “10 things I hate about you” because it was just too easy to think of 10 things I hate about you (and Sallie Mae)!

I hate the way you balk over me,

and the way that you don’t care.

I hate the way you set the bar,

I hate it how you’re so unfair.

I hate your big dumb absolutes

and the way you rob me blind.

I hate you so much it makes me sick,

it even sucks my time.

I hate the way you’re always “right.”

I hate it when you lie.

I hate it when your staff just laughs,

even worse when they make me cry.

I hate it when int’rest compounds,

and the fact that you’ll always call.

But mostly I hate that you just won’t go away,

not even close…

not even a little bit…

not even at all.
