How to Protect Your Jewelry

by Melanie

I’ll never forget the day. I was ten years old and my mom and I were on a mother-daughter trip to Disneyland. Growing up in Southern California, Disneyland was practically my backyard, so it was fun to play around in the happiest place on earth.

Halfway through the day, after taking a ride with Indiana Jones, my mom looked down at her wedding ring.

The diamond was gone.

The prongs looked so lonely, and the space where the diamond used to be was glaring back at us.

My mom’s eyes started to well up. Her diamond was gone and her wedding ring wasn’t the same.

We were in Disneyland, a massive place and the diamond could be anywhere. Optimistically, my mom went to the Lost and Found to see if anyone had brought anything back.

Nothing.

The happiest place on earth soon turned into a not-so-happy place. I think we hung around a little while longer, but it was hard to have fun after that.

After all, it was my mom’s wedding ring. The ring she was given, after she decided to leave Michigan behind to be with my dad in California.

That memory has stuck with me now for two decades. Losing something as important and valuable as your wedding ring is devastating.

Luckily, there are ways to help protect your jewelry from a variety of possible factors.

Have you ever considered jewelry insurance? I didn’t either, until recently, but it’s something I am interested in. I have a vintage ring that my faux mother-in-law has given me as a gift, as a symbol of our love and family. I get compliments on it all the time and I feel naked without it.

Jewelry insurance is just another way to protect your assets. Your jewelry has a huge emotional and financial value, so why wouldn’t you want to protect that? Jewelry insurance can save you from a lot of headache in case something happens.

For example, Perfect Circle® Jewelry Insurance by Jewelers Mutual covers:

  • Loss
  • Theft
  • Damage
  • Mysterious disappearance

In case something happens, you are insured and they will take care of you. They are also the gold standard when it comes to jewelry insurance, as they have been around over a century, since 1913!

In personal finance, we talk a lot about protecting our assets and investing in our future – – if you have an engagement ring, family heirloom, etc. take steps to learn more about what jewelry insurance can offer and start protecting your jewelry.

This post is provided in partnership with Perfect Circle® Jewelry Insurance by Jewelers Mutual to help educate people about protecting their investments. They will have a booth at FinCon, so be sure to stop by and say “Hello!”

I lost the center stone out of my ring earlier this year but managed to find it on my bathroom floor. It cost me $100 to get it reset!

People forget about protecting their precious stones, unfortunately. This is a fresh reminder to do it.

Yes, it is so important!

We took out an insurance policy on my engagement ring so if I’m anywhere in the world and either lose it or have it stolen, we’re covered for the full appraised value. I also tell everyone to get the prongs checked every year of your rings.

Nice work! That is great advice, too.

We have an insurance policy on my ring, but I think it is only from theft out of our home. I actually wonder all the time what I would do if something happened to my ring when I was out of our home. Thanks for sharing this!

I don’t have a ton of jewelry, but I do need to look into insuring the items I already have. I’ve been slacking when it comes to that!

Yeah, it’s easy to forget about! But so important. Feel free to talk to Perfect Circle at FinCon if you want. See you soon!

We use Perfect Circle to insure the engagement ring. Ring insurance is very inexpensive and something I’m glad we have. I pay $60 a year to have peace of mind.

That is so awful that the diamond on your mom’s ring was lost! A few years ago, we were at a shaving cream fight at a friend’s house (said friend is obsessed with Halloween), and not thinking, I had kept my ring on. It slipped off my finger at some point. We were on a front lawn, with shaving cream everywhere. Somehow, my boyfriend managed to find it! It only cost $330 (compared to a wedding/engagement ring), but it’s the only ring I wear everyday. Insuring is a good idea!

Yeah, there are too many close calls! Glad your bf found it. I wear my rings everyday too. We’ll have to compare notes at FinCon 🙂

The ring came with a “diamond guarantee” for the stone itself, but the ring needed an additional warranty. That warranty requires me to get it checked over by a company jeweller every 6 months. While it’s a pain, I want to keep that warranty valid, because I’m kind of a klutz and am concerned about losing the stone. It can so easily happen… I think my fiance paid any extra $120 for the warranty, and it has already come in handy when one of the prongs was a bit loose.

Nice! That seems like a good arrangement. It’s important to protect and glad you are taking measures to do so. 🙂

I don’t have jewelry insurance… hmm, maybe I should look into it. My mother-in-law lost her heirloom diamond engagement ring 2 years ago only to find it a year later in the back of her closet! Needless to say, we were all pretty relieved!

You should definitely look into it! Whew, I’m so glad your mother-in-law found her heirloom.

Yikes that is so sad that your mom lost her ring at such a happy place. Disneyland is in my backyard too and I have lost a ton of things there in the past four years, none as important as my diamond though.

Craziness! I’m sure so much stuff gets lost there.

My wedding rings are from Kays. They have a protection plan that I’ve used many times – all for missing diamonds. The hardest part is keeping up with the 6 month inspections, but it’s worth it to have the diamonds replaced for free.

I feel for your mom! That’s just devastating. No wonder you could never forget that. I wouldn’t either. And the idea of jewelry insurance is great. If you can put a price on peace of mind, then this would be it!

Oh, that’s a bummer! Looks like the Happiest Place on Earth has some bad memories attached to it now. Jewelry insurance is definitely a must, in cases like these. After all, you get insurance for cars and just about everything else, so why not for valuable jewelry as well, right? So this is great advice. Oh, and how on earth does one get a faux mother-in-law? The term just cracked me up.

Thanks for stopping by! I say “faux mother-in-law” as my partner and I are practically married (together 6.5 years), but aren’t legally married. So it’s just a fun joke 🙂
